Shivangini Singh so close to her dream yet so far as finance becomes her hurdle. Will the State government support this daughter as she sweats for making the ends meet for becoming part of a 13-day Antarctica Expedition hosted by Robert Swan?

Ritanjali Hastir, Associate Editor, Jan, Shimla – Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world — proved Shivangini Singh, a young and talented, Application Developer, hailing from Shimla and currently working in Bangalore.

Shivangini has been selected to participate in a 13-day Antarctica Expedition hosted by Robert Swan (first person to walk both the poles), Climate Force and The Explorer’s Passage that will take place from 27 February to 12 March 12, 2018, wherein they will gain knowledge about climate change, renewable energy, sustainability and how it affects our present and future worldwide, along with a better understanding of the continent’s fragile ecosystem, experience its unique wildlife and observe the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, all the while learning to be the next generation of leaders with sustainability as its core value for policy development and business.

Girls are capable of doing everything men are capable of doing but ironically when the financial angle comes in view it becomes difficult as in spite of being able to prove her worth she has to struggle to raise funds for her expedition which will cost approximately $22,000 USD (includes airfare, the expedition fee, room and board and the necessary gear to embark on this expedition).

“It is a matter of great pride for me to represent my home state Himachal at this global platform. I intend to gain firsthand exposure to the changing environmental scenario so I can come up with real scientific solutions to combat the same, rather than being a vocal activist for climate change” shares Shivangini.

She has accomplished certification in Basic Mountaineering Course by successful completion of four weeks at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports, Manali (HP).

“I wish to join this expedition because it would enable me to protect the very fragile ecosystem of my native from the repercussions of climate change and better preserve the mighty Himalayas, which I hold in great reverence. I wish to be at the vanguard in the fight for sustainable future at my workplace and community”, she adds further.

Currently she in talks with some organizations that would support her financially or in kind for undertaking this expedition but so far this little dare devil is not able to break the ice. How long will she need to struggle for making a difference in the world and especially make her home state proud is something that only time can reveal. We need to change attitudes. We can only change attitudes by working together.

The Government will do its bit, but I want you all to do your bit, too and here Shivangini has done her part now by initiating an action it’s time for reaction from the concerned authorities! (She may be contacted: [email protected])
