Observed as May Day, it is also known as International Labour Day and was first observed in the United States of America in 1886 to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago.

In 1707, on the same day Great Britain was formed as a Union between England and Scotland.

In 1960, an American U-2 spy plane flying at 60,000 feet was shot down in Central Russia heightening the Cold War tensions.

2004, saw eight former communist nations and two Mediterranean countries join the European Union marking its largest ever expansion.

In the year 1960 in India, the State of Maharashtra was formed.

In 2011, on this day U S Special Operations forces killed Osama Bin Laden during a raid on his secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
