Solve the following question in less than a minute

Which of the following is the result of multiplying   45,678 x 56,789 ?

  1. 2,59,40,07,942
  2. 2,59,40,06,942
  3. 2,59,40,05,942
  4. 2,59,40,04,942
  5. 2,59,40,03,942

The Answer is Choice #  a or 2,59,40,07,942

Short Cut Vedic Maths Logic for the answer

In Vedic Maths and the Hindu Decimal System of Numbers, there is a concept called Single Digit Number for all numbers which are double digits and bigger.

So the Single Digit for say 1,234 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 = 1+ 0  =  1

Hence, the number 1,234 eventually reduces to 1

Now whenever we multiply 2 numbers the answer’s single digit will be equal to the single digit of the product of the 2 numbers.

Let’s say we are multiplying 11 x 12 = 132

Single Digits of 11 and 12 are 1+1 = 2   and that of 12 is 1+2 = 3

Since we multiplied 11 x 12, we also multiply the single digits of 11 and 12, namely 2 and 3 and we get 6

Now the single digit of 132 = 1+3+2 = 6

You will notice that the single digits match up – which is 6

The above mentioned question is also solved likewise – in fact instead of the multiplying those humongous 5 digit numbers we simply need to simple addition.

Note that the number 9 need not be added and any combinations of 9s can also be dropped = say 4+5 = 9 = just drop them.

So the Single Digit of 45678

4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 =        13+8 = 21  =  2+1 = 3   (notice I left out adding 4 + 5 = 9)

Similarly the single digit of 56789

5 + 6 + 7 + 8 +9   =       26 = 2+ 6 = 8       (notice I left out adding 9)

Now 3 x 8 =  24 and single digit of 2 + 4 = 6

We now need to find out the single digits of the 5 answer choices.

In fact, choice a yields the number 6 and hence we need not check the other 4 choices.

Single Digit

  1. 2,59,40,07,942 6
  2. 2,59,40,06,942 5
  3. 2,59,40,05,942 4
  4. 2,59,40,04,942 3
  5. 2,59,40,03,942 2

NEVER ADD up a 9 or any combination of numbers such as 4+5 or say 6+3.

Adding 9s doesn’t lead to any change in the eventual Single Digit answer.

Questions such as the above are asked on the NDA entrance exam, Banking PO exams, SSC and even the dreaded IIM CAT.
